Heidelberg and Eltham battle it outHeidelberg has continued its stranglehold over the Northern Football league with a merciless 138 point win over Eltham in what was round 10 of the 2009 NFL Division 1 season. Danny Nolan kicked a season best 7, while Symes continued his remarkable from holding down the fullback position. Michael Gay was made a successful return after a brief layoff, as did veteran defender Matthew Laing who has been plagued by injury throughout most of the year.

One of the many highlights for the day included the exciting debut of 18-year old Michael Brunelli. After several dominant performances in the under 19s Micahel was finally given the oppourtunity we have all been waiting for, and to some degree expected. Michael is now the fifth under 19 eligible player to make his senior debut which can only mean good things for the future of the Heidelberg Football Club, and we can only hope there are more to come.

The 24.22.166 to 4.4.28 victory now sees Heidelberg well clear in first position with eight games to play. Next week we’re on the road again to take on West Preston Lakeside in what is normally an enjoyable contest.

THE Heidelberg derby has once again lived up to expectations with a seesawing affair between local rivals Heidelberg and North Heidelberg. With the tigers trailing at 3/4 time for the first time this season a much needed spray from coach Plunkett sparked the away side to a 6-goal final term and eventually prevail by 15 points.

With both sides relatively close to full strength the scene was set for another blockbuster at Shelley St Reserve. Heidelberg struggled to find any fluency during the first term and did not kick their first goal until the dying moments of the quarter however as has been the case in recent weeks the backline stood up under constant pressure and were able to curb any major damage to the scoreboard.
