The drought is over. Heidelberg’s seven year wait for its 19th Division 1 Premiership ended on Saturday after defeating Macleod by 16-points in what can only be described as a gutsy performance.
In front of a huge crowd the Tigers fought against all odds in what was a historic day for the club with the reserves also tasting Premiership success for the second time in four years with an upset win over Greensborough.
Heidelberg lifted in the face of adversity, with a red-card to centre half back Josh Gribben and a mounting injury toll that included superstar forward Daniel Connors, it looked as though the game was out of the Tigers’ reach at ¾ time.
However the decision to move Michael Finn to full-forward to start the final term proved to be a masterstroke as the champion ruckman booted two goals to ultimately seal victory for the Tigers who were then able to cling on to their 2+ goal advantage for the final 14 minutes of the game.
In only his fourth senior game 17-year old Lachlan “Irish” Wilson was awarded best-on-ground honours. His work in and around the stoppages throughout the day combined with his immense pressure was a major factor in Heidelberg’s win. Daniel Cookson was named BOG in the reserves respectively.
Similarly, Marcus Marigliani who was named best by the club played a huge part in the victory with three goals and 25+ disposals. He swiftly announced his retirement following the victory however confirmed that if he was to “have a run next year” it would be with the Tigers.
