In a match to remember in near perfect conditions in front of a bumper crowd the Bergers got up in a 1-Point thriller against modern day rivals Northcote Park. Sadly, our reserves went down fighting against a premiership favourite.

In the seniors, we enjoyed our best start of season 2017 kicking 6 straight goals to Northcote’s 3.2.

Buoyed by the return of Gilmore in the ruck, the midfield looked slick getting inside 50 and our forwards converted truthfully to set the tone for a high scoring match.

Unfortunately what looked to be a serious knee injury to star Adam Symes in the first quarter meant that we were a man down as the lead changed hands many times throughout the match and it was Northcote who took the lead into the main break.

Sullivan, Knight, Marigliani, Stone and Gaylard provided plenty of drive in the midfield and an inspired effort from Grimley (4 goals) meant that we were always in a game which ebbed and flowed for 4 quarters.

An opportunistic soccer goal from Sargaent and some nifty footwork in front of goal from Gaylard put the bergs in front and after what felt like an eternity the siren sounded with Heidelberg the victors.

Jake Truefeldt and Sam Grimley enjoyed their best games in a Heidelberg jumper and the ruck pairing of McNamara and Gilmore provided our midfielders with first use all day.

Accurate goal kicking, solid defence and an all-round team effort meant the Berg’s walked away with the chocolates in an epic.

The win, our 3rd for the season was huge in the grand scheme of things as Northcote Park came into the contest sitting atop of the NFL ladder and we now sit a game and percentage out of the 5.

The large crowd, consisting mostly of the sold out ladies day function, were treated to a fantastic game of local football and next week we look forward to hosting the in-form West Preston as we look to make amends for our 10-point loss in Round 1.

In the Reserves, the boys battled manfully against a very slick opposition who look to feature deep in September.

The continued improvement of the younger players, namely Silic, Honey, Howarth and Daniels is a constant reminder that the future of the club is in safe hands, with these young players playing in a grade well above their years and holding their own. Baxter continued his strong from with another strong showing in an otherwise tough morning of footy.

Returning veteran Jake Williams also showed that he is more than capable of playing good football despite having a three year hiatus.
